School districts now struggle with median lunch debts of $2,500 per school. That's an increase from $2,000 in 2016 and 2014, according to the School Nutrition Association (SNA) survey. This added debt is impacting individual youth, their families, our schools and costing the overall US economy.
According to a recent study done by the Urban Institute, the additional rule changes and cuts to the SNAP program, 982,000 students are expected to will lose access to free or reduced lunches. Data from the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) concludes that nearly 100,000 schools and education institutions provide 30 million students lunch on a daily basis. On average, the cost of a single meal for an elementary student is $2.48 and $2.74 for a high-school student.
